“Make room for new emotions.”
Inside Out 2 follows Riley as she enters her teenage years and her mind’s headquarters is shaken up by the arrival of new Emotions. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust have long kept things running, but the balance they know is disrupted when Anxiety appears. What begins as a familiar inner world quickly turns into a struggle to adapt to change. The film stays close to Riley’s shifting feelings as her inner life grows more crowded and unsettled.
Kelsey Mann directs this animated comedy-drama, with Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Tony Hale and Liza Lapira among the voices guiding the emotional chaos inside Riley’s mind. Their characters give shape to the competing impulses that push and pull her through this new stage of life. The film was made in Japan and the United States and runs 97 minutes. It keeps its focus on the emotional machinery of adolescence rather than on outside spectacle.
Set almost entirely within an imaginative inner landscape, the film turns abstract feelings into a vivid, constantly shifting world. Its tone mixes humor with unease, using fantasy elements to make Riley’s growing anxiety feel immediate and personal. The result is a story about change, self-control and the difficulty of making room for what arrives next.
