“A journey through understanding and fellowship.”
Rain Man follows Charlie Babbitt after his father’s death leads him back to Cincinnati and into the life of the older brother he never really knew. Raymond lives in a care facility, and Charlie takes him out so they can travel together to Los Angeles. What begins as a practical errand becomes a road trip that steadily alters the brothers’ relationship and Charlie’s sense of what family means.

Barry Levinson directs this drama, which stars Dustin Hoffman as Raymond and Tom Cruise as Charlie. Hoffman plays the guarded, gifted brother whose routines shape every step of the journey, while Cruise gives Charlie the impatience and self-interest that gradually give way to something more open. The film also uses their travel to place the two men in constant contact, making each stop part of the change between them.

Set in the United States and moving from Cincinnati to Las Vegas and beyond, the film mixes road-movie movement with intimate family drama. Its tone is reflective and sentimental, but it also carries tension as the brothers navigate a world that does not easily make room for Raymond. The result is a story about disability, dependence and the difficult work of understanding another person.
